Scope

The Campbell Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Campbell name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Campbell name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Campbell's), by time period (18th Century Campbell's), or by topic (Campbell DNA, Campbell Occupations, Campbell Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Meaning of Surname 'Campbell'

Campbell is primarily a Scottish surname of Gaelic origins. In Scotland, the name itself derives from two Scottish Gaelic words. "Cam" and "Béal" meaning "Crooked mouth" or "wry-mouthed", originally a nickname which over time became used as a surname.google

Campbell DNA

Since DNA can be traced along a patrilineal (father to father to father) line it can be interesting for someone studying the genealogy of a surname, theoretically at least. The Y chromosome conveniently follows our Western Europe convention on last names.

External Campbell DNA Projects

Although there are now many companies offering DNA testing for genealogical purposes, Family Tree DNA is the largest. They have groups organized around surnames including this one:

Wikitree Campbell DNA Takers

The following link shows the Wikitree Campbell Profiles that have DNA associated with them:

Campbell DNA Group Project on WikiTree

As an extension of the Campbell DNA Project at Family Tree DNA we have created the Campbell DNA Group Project on WikiTree. Please consider joining us and you can find more information at the link below.

Instructions for working on this Project

Here are two help pages to help you get started... How to use Wikitree and Adding to WikiTree. Help menus are located at the top right of every page.

First

Add your family, parents, grandparents on back until you come to a point where you connect with your most distant Ancestor.

Second

Open the Campbell Name Study Project page and

Add early Campbell's

Add early Campbell's to the appropriate section - Ireland, Scotland, Ontario, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, etc. (add new sections as needed) - this would be generally from Documented Campbell's to 1850 (1865 if you spot someone interesting). You will need to do this in edit mode and follow along with what has already been started with Virginia. WikiMark-Up has a bit of a learning curve, so following the existing work will hopefully help. If you don't feel comfortable adding early Dunnahoos into the table format, add their information in the lists below the tables and we (those who are comfortable working in the tables) will work to add them to the sortable table.

Search WikiTree

Search WikiTree to see if any of the Campbell's listed in the tables already have a profile and move the source information to the existing profile then add the WikiTree link to the name in the table. WikiMark-up for an internal link is:

[[Gaulden-7|Mags Gaulden]] which would give my name in a like this in the table: Mags Gaulden - My WikiTreeID is Gaulden-7.

This is example from the Dunnahoo Name Study: James Dunnahoo, the first entry for Virginia, from the table in edit mode so you can see what it looks like:

|-<br> |'''James'''|| '''Dunnahoo''' || || || '''1776''' || '''[[Dunnahoo-10|James Dunnahoo]]''

So you see that James Dunnahoo's WikiTree ID is used just like mine in the example above.

Add profiles to the Tree

Any profiles that don't match any other profile existing WikiTree profile need to have profile reated for them. If they have a link in the table they already have a profile. Once added, their WikiTreeID needs to be added to this page - or to the table and any source information or notes from this page moved to the profile.

Third

Write - If you feel more comfortable researching and/or writing information, something like an overview of Dunnahoo's in Virginia, please feel free to work in that area. Again, follow the work I have already done as far as any Wiki formatting.

AND fourth ask questions!

Please add me to the Campbell project. My 4xGreat Grandfather was Rodger Campbell born about 1777- supposably in Scotland. His migration path is as follows. He is listed on a Personal property tax list in Franklin Co., VA bet. 1801-1814. Then found in Cumberland Co., KY in 1817-1832. Then to Carroll County, Missouri 1832- until his death in 1840. I did have my father do a YDna test. Is the only way to add his YDNA - to create an account for him?

I’m happy to add you to the project. I took it over and I’ve been looking at other name studies and it definitely needs some help! And yes, the only way to get your dad’s ydna on WT is to add a profile for him. Did your dad do a big Y test or one of the others? Either way, I would highly encourage you to enroll him in the Campbell group at FTDNA. I can send you the info so you can contact the group manager.
Yes - I did join on FTDNA. Kevin Campbell sent me the links/results. So all new to me. I did the Y-37 with the thought that I could upgrade it- when and if I understood it better. lol So I can add the profile for him without him being involved? He is 91 years old and has a passing interest in all this.

That’s great! You can upgrade but I have heard that sometimes an additional sample is needed. My dad is the same, a passing interest…. I think he goes along with it to pacify me! LOL!
Finally, Here. My 5th great grandfather was James Campbell who came from Cecil County, Maryland and settled in Lee County, Virginia. My goal has always been to prove who his father was. This was the main reason i joined the Campbell project and Did the BigY.

Afternoon (well, here in Florida anyway), I would love to join this group. I have my Campbell line back to mod 1880s in Pennsylvania.

Please add me as a member of the Campbell one name study. My Campbell ancestors (that I know of) were from North Carolina. I added a table for North Carolina Campbells and one entry, my 4th great-grandfather, Norman Campbell. I have a book on North Carolina Campbells--Bridges, Myrtle N., ‘’Scattered Seed, Genealogical Research Data of Southeastern North Carolina’’ (1999)--and will be using it and other records to add more North Carolina Campbells.
I just started to work on our Campbell Heritage. They were among early settlers of central Pennsylvania, but I don't know how far back that goes yet. However I have discovered an an impressive family Civil War record.

Let me know if the table for PA is in the wrong place. I was thinking that is how you wanted it but wanted to be sure. Once confirmed I can add more to the list. I plan to put up the Military war veterans as they are the most important members.

Cheers!!

Hi from hot Texas!! My Campbell family was in Missouri in the mid 1800s and was the name of my paternal grandfather's mother. Her family was in Kentucky, I believe, in the early 1800s. The name of my great great grandfather was Jacob A Campbell - born circa 1807 in Kentucky. Blessed to be part of this great family!! An update: I discovered that Jacob A Campbell was probably born In South Carolina, then migrated to Kentucky and Missouri with his parents.
Hi: I am researching Sir William Campbell and Lady Hannah Hadley. They were married in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, Canada. I know from some correspondence that the is the granddaughter of Sir William & Lady Hannah. I cannot find out who her parents were????? Any help would be appreciated. Sir William Campbell was a Chief Justice in Toronot, York, Ontario. He was my husband's 4th great grandfather. Thank YOu
Happy Thanksgiving. I have come to a brick wall with the father of William Shield Campbell born 1811. A lot of people think he is Daniel Campbell(common name). I would like to compare DNA with known relatives of Robert Campbell born 1709. Thanks
My father Alexander Campbell had a brother and sister Cronelius and Jacqueline who were adpoted in the 1940's and I am trying to find out more information for him. He is in his late 70's and has not seen these siblings for 60 years. Any help would be much appreciated.

The plural of Campbell doesn't have an apostrophe. It's "Campbells".
